As a disciple of Sonny Rollins, Bob Ackerman is an arch-romantic; a view that is justified by his beautiful harmonies and his fervent improvisations. On closer examination, these striking characteristics reveal an undeniable structure of contemporary jazz proportion and strength. This CD offers ten compositions of conventional structure, mostly 16 to 24 bar song-forms, most of which are written and arranged by Ackerman. To records them, he has chosen to use three rhythm sections as he performs on tenor sax, alto sax, or flute in trio or quartet formats.
